About Alice

The face behind Olive & Wine

Alice, known in Greek as Aliki, was born in Australia, to Greek immigrants who arrived in Darwin in 1956.

She has 3 children and is married to her loving husband of 40 years. Family gatherings and Food were always a focal point in this Big Greek Family. She quickly discovered cooking delicious Greek Food, kept her children and their friends at home. Over the years she owned her own healthy food café, cooking everything, and avoiding processed foods. She then moved on to the Greek Nursing Home in Brisbane, as the Food Supervisor. Here she found much joy cooking for them, and hearing their stories of growing up in their own villages in Greece.

Alice hung up her apron, pots and pans, for a career in Real Estate.

During this time, Inspired by her Greek-Egyptian born grandmother, mother, her children, and her many travels to the Greek Islands.

The idea of the Breaking Bread cookbook came to life. She now had something precious to hand down to them.

She has sold a couple of thousand copies, mostly word of mouth and raving reviews from family and friends. Her most rewarding compliments have been from young couples, who after leaving home, could follow her book, and cook just like the pictures show. Nailing it from their first attempt.

Breaking Bread is a personal journey with food and my greek heritage.

The recipes in my book are a loving compilation.

Some from my mother, and my grandmother, and the women I watched cook as I grew up.

My recipes are a blend of traditional Greek dishes and my own modern
interpretation. Over the years I’ve found ways to improve, simplify, and
work out tips, to perfect every dish. Leftover cooked meats become an
inspiration for a new recipe. Before shopping for new groceries, I find ways to use them up first.

Breaking bread is a resource to help you start your journey with Greek cooking. All recipes are measured in cups making it easy to use.
I’m focused on encouraging as many people as possible to eat more vegetables and legumes, and cook more food from scratch. To introduce children to the mediteranean diet very early in life as mine did. Eating beans, lentils, spinach, tomatoes, the list goes on, was never a problem for my children, as it’s all they knew.

Once again my love of food, keeping up with traditions, and the greek way of life, was calling, and so Olive and wine was born.
